Lifegroups ~ What are Lifegroups?
Where life change CAN happen best.
“So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25 (Message)
F.A.Q.
Q: What is a Lifegroup?
A Lifegroup is simply a small group of ideally 3 to 6 people who commit to walk alongside each other, intentionally giving one another access to their lives, with the goal of spurring each other on in their journey towards knowing Christ and making Him known.
Ultimately, what we hope to see in people is LIFE CHANGE. And at South City, we believe that life change can happen best in the context of a lifegroup.
At South City, lifegroups are the primary vehicles by which we lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and are an essential expression of our commitment to live a life without walls.
A lifegroup is more than just a bible study, but a safe place where we can belong and be real; where we can ask questions, wrestle with our faith, and share our struggles, our victories, our joys, our pains; where we can encourage one another, pray for each other, eat together (!), learn to apply God’s Word to our lives, and challenge one another to become fully devoted followers of Christ.
Likewise, lifegroups allow us to remain outward-focused and extend God’s Kingdom in tangible ways. In and through lifegroups, we can remain immersed in the culture and deeply connected to what goes around us. Together, we can seek to love and bless our neighbors, enflesh Jesus, and BE the faithful church in small pockets scattered throughout our city.
Q: What goes on during a Lifegroup meeting?
Generally, lifegroups discuss a set of Life Questions – thought-provoking /character-challenging discussion questions—that stem from the most recent sermon and that encourage honest conversation and real life-application. Other times, lifegroups may do a book study or go through various discipleship modules specially made for small groups.
In addition, lifegroups may also choose to engage in community projects that serve their respective neighborhoods or the surrounding communities.
The great thing about South City’s lifegroups is that each one is unique in its own way. In fact, we believe in celebrating each group’s uniqueness. It is quite expected that the atmosphere of one group will be different for another.
However, although each lifegroup is unique, all lifegroup meetings have these in common: They must be intentional, intensely relational, and missional. The essence and primary goal of each lifegroup must be the same as well – to make disciples. All lifegroups must help us become total followers of Jesus Christ by creating an environment where we can all truly grow in intimacy with God, in authentic community with one another, and in influence with the world.
Q: When and where do Lifegroups meet?
Lifegroups meet throughout the week, throughout the city. Each lifegroup establishes its own time and place to meet. Most meetings go on for about 1-2 hours, but this is flexible depending on the group. Lifegroups meet in homes, in offices, on campuses, coffee shops, restaurants – anywhere really!
Q: How long do lifegroups last?
Initially, a lifegroup commits to meet every-other-week for at least 12 months. Since the primary goal of a lifegroup is to make disciples, a lifegroup purposes to multiply after the agreed period of time or whenever it is organically feasible to do so. Although lifegroups are free to naturally grow, evolve, and if necessary, even split-up after 12 months in order to reach more people, members may still very well choose to journey closely together for life!
Q: Who can participate in Lifegroups?
Anyone can! No matter where we are in our spiritual journey, we need authentic relationships with others who are on the journey too.
Q: How do I get connected to a Lifegroup?
Option 1
We’ve observed that many times, elements of a “lifegroup” may actually already be in play in existing, organically formed groups of people – ex. relatives, friends, neighbors, officemates, classmates, teammates, “kabarakadas” – who come to a Sunday gathering but are “under the radar” so to speak. In these cases, the concept of a “lifegroup” is there, but it just doesn’t have a name. If this is true with you – if you have familiar people around you and would like to be counted as a lifegroup – then let us know who you are so we can support you and supply you with various resources to help you grow in your journey. Stop by the Connection Desk at any of our gathering sites.
Option 2
There are several lifegroups that are on-going throughout the city that you can be a part of. Check out the listing of Lifegroups on the right side of this page. Read the Group Profiles to get a better idea of the kind of group it is and contact a Lifegroup Leader directly for more information. Or stop by the Connection Desk at any of our gathering sites.
Q: Is there a fee I need to pay to join a Lifegroup?
No. However, there are times when members may be asked to purchase their own materials. The cost for this is usually minimal.
If you need assistance in purchasing materials, please let your Lifegroup Leader know and we will help you get the materials you need.
